| Temption Watches |
Temption and its unusual model range represent an original point of view within an industry that has been spoiled by the success of the Swiss style of watchmaking. This is a collection that is styled in a modern and contemporary way, without lacking in warmth, and whose design reflects an occupation with modern, creative philosophies. Its founder, Klaus Ulbrich, occupied himself for a long time with the question of why some things created by humans easily last decades, even centuries, and remain contemporary, while others hardly make it a season. Ancient cave drawings, for example, represent animals with a stylistic elegance and grace that is today still unsurpassed and fascinating. The prehistoric person who created the drawings located in southern France's Chauvet cave about 31,000 years ago (see image on this page), "invented" abstract elegance by relinquishing everything that is insignificant in his or her depiction. The talented painter succeeded with use of minimalistic lines in perfectly capturing the character of the animals, as well as the kinetics and charm of their movements.
These cave drawings have stood firm against the test of time due to the level of their artistry - they truly represent the meaning of the word "timeless." Without a doubt there must be a law to it, one that builds upon the blocks of minimalism, clean functionality, and originality. Ulbrich and Temption attempt to transfer this "law" to its watch design by use of the ideals typical of design schools such as the Moderns and Wabi Sabi. Components such as the overall simplicity of shapes come from the Bauhaus movement; the attention to materials and
simple warmth, from Wabi Sabi. From both philosophical schools comes the idea of reducing to only that which is necessary - as well as the conclusion that less is often more.
The focal point of Temption's design character is a model that Ulbrich likes to call the "information pyramid." At the top of this pyramid are located the central hour and minute indicators; other functions follow underneath in order to give these main functions a visual priority. For this reason, the most contrast of the
dial visuals can be found between the dial and hands. The date window is the same color as the dial and not framed (so the dial remains calm); the totalizers and stop functions are not encircled, and the stop hands are not outfitted with arbors for the same reason. At the end of this information pyramid the brand's logo is situated, most unimportant to reading the time, and for this reason it is printed shiny black on a matte black background, where it may only be seen - and then quite clearly - when light shines on it from the side.
At a time when most smaller German watch manufacturers - including Temption - are producing relatively large watches, Temption has introduced a chronograph with a surprisingly small case diameter of 29.2 mm (and 9.6 mm height), striking in its delicateness, for the 2004 season. The Cora model may even be the smallest automatic wrist chronograph ever.
