Revue Thommen Watches

A small brand celebrates a big anniversary in 2003: Revue Thommen turns 150 years old. Gedeon Thommen founded his small reassembly workshop in Waldenburg, Switzerland, in 1853 and soon became well known in specialist circles for technically good craftsmanship and the above-average quality of his products, which were known under the brand name Revue. Later, his successors established the company among Swiss brands whose products also proved themselves adequate for tough military purposes and aviation during the first decades of this century. Revue continued to partially use its own watch movements until well into the 1950s.

Today the brand belongs to Switzerland's Grovana Watch Company, who discovered a small treasure in the basement of the old building when moving into it: vintage movements, partially assembled, and partially left in individual components. They are presently being reworked, completed with new components, and put into watches. The manufacture of Caliber GT 54 has already begun, and over the year another four movements are to follow. Collectors should

keep themselves informed, for the prices of these manufacture products will probably not be as high as some others.

The rest of this 150-year-old brand's line is characterized by typically large pilot's watches, designed in a practical and sober manner like functional board clocks. They are outfitted so as to be able to deal with all the incalculability of a job well done in the cockpit. The company's board clock with an eight-day manually wound movement, designed to be built into an instrument panel, is a thematic addition to the existing wristwatch program. The Airspeed Chronograph is available in either quartz or automatic and can also be had as a stylistically identical four-handed automatic model, the fourth hand being for the date. The visually interesting model Airspeed Big Date, based on a refined ETA Unitas pocket watch movement, is outfitted with a double digit large date. The silver-colored dial bearing a traditional honeycomb guilloche decoration, applied numerals, and polished skeletonized hands underscores the timepiece's nostalgic charm.
