Nienaber Watches

I don't have any chronographs in my collection," says Rainer Nienaber, leaving this statement open at the end and also leaving the listener unsure as to whether this is an elementary concept or not. He doesn't need them, might be the part left out, for even without chronographs this man hailing from Germany's Westphalia region disposes of a remarkable collection of wristwatches and wall clocks. Nienaber, born in 1955, learned the trade of toolmaker in a company that specialized in making cameras and precision measuring technology. Since electronics had not yet become popular in all areas of this fine technology at that time, Nienaber experienced the world of precision production as a craftsman, and his favorite measurement was to become the thousandth of a millimeter.

After his time in the army (Germany has a mandatory draft), he began to learn a new trade, discovering at the same time that he had found a career in which he could use both his creativity and his dexterity. Beginning with the repair of watches, he quickly developed into a designer of timepieces, thoroughly enjoying the construction and finishing of his ticking friends. From there, it was just a small step to becoming a producer himself. The handcrafted precision regulators he builds are known far past the borders of Germany and are very well received by collectors. It was only a question of time before Nienaber began to construct wristwatches. These are oriented to a certain point on his beloved clocks. The easy reading of watches is something that the man from the cigar city of Bunde finds important, and so the dials of his watches are designed very clearly and also contain a "King Size" date window that needs no help from a magnifying lens or the like. In addition, Nienaber shows a heart for lefthanders, designing special models with the crown on the other side. Nienaber has designed his newest model, the King Size Regulator, so that the dial is exactly the same as on his clocks. Since there is no wristwatch movement in existence that features subsidiary seconds at 12 o'clock, he correspondingly rebuilt an old manually wound movement and can now proudly present the world's first and only wrist regulator with "correct" dial divisions.

Another similarity that Rainer Nienaber's clocks and wristwatches both share is that their movements are wonderfully crafted and finely finished.
