Who still writes letters in this day and age, when everyone has a cellular phone and e-mail? Any manufacturer of high-quality writing instruments really has to make a herculean effort not to get lost in the shuffle! And hardly any company has done it with more success than Montblanc. This firm, sporting a rounded white star in its emblem, is the peak of the fountain and ballpoint pen world.
When Montblanc started up its own watch brand, the Hamburg-based company, founded in Germany's Hansa city in 1906, was following a trend toward diversification and extending its product palette to include articles outside its main industry started by other luxury-goods manufacturers.
This brand so rich in tradition garnered a lot of head-shaking in the watch industry when it exhibited at Geneva's S.I.H.H. in 1997 as it prepared to climb to the peak it had already reached in the writing-instrument industry.
Trade experts wondered why one of the most famous producers of fountain and ballpoint pens would attempt to try its luck in a field already overflowing with famous watch brands. In the meantime, skeptical voices have piped down noticeably as the first collection, of which the highest-quality component was doubtless its grand name, has been followed by models of much better quality that can stand up even to a comparison to other brands' models in this price class.
At first Montblanc produced watches with gold and gold-plated cases for connoisseurs of elegant articles for everyday use. In the last couple of years, however, the brand has ventured a step in the direction of consumers who prefer steel cases. Consistently adding on to the collection, Montblanc first launched the steel Sports Collection, then the rectangular Profile models in
2002, and finally the Time Walker series in 2003, comprising simple, sporty steel watches in an XL format.
Montblanc has thus become a "full-service" watch brand of the upper middle price segment, its five-pointed star more and more often showing profile on its watches' crowns.
