Laco Watches |
Situated somewhat away from the mainstream marketing rivers running through Pforzheim, one of the great names of German watchmaking recently celebrated its seventy-fifth anniversary: Lacher & Co, better known under its brand name Laco.
The brand achieved early fame when it was named by the Lufwaffe as one of the five companies authorized to assemble its very large aviation watches, working alongside such grand names as IWC in Schaffhausen, A. Lange & Sohne in Glashutte, Wempe in Hamburg, and Stowa, also located in Pforzheim. In the year 2000, on the occasion of the company's seventy-fifth anniversary, the firm reissued a strictly limited edition of this watch, outfitted as was the original - with the hand-wound caliber Durowe D5, a pocket watch movement with a diameter of 49.63 mm. Modeled upon the oversized original, Lacher is producing a series of scaled-down pilot's watches (case diameter 42 mm). The five models of this series orient themselves in design on the original model, but were adapted to the spirit of the times due to the movements that run them (quartz, manually wound, and automatic movements).
Because of the great success of this series of pilot's watches, Laco introduced another series of high-quality pilot's watches to the market in 2003. The five new models are outfitted only with mechanical movements. Transparent case backs allow a look at the decorated movements featuring blued screws and cotes de Geneve. It is worth noting that this new series of pilot's watches will for the first time have two models in a smaller case diameter of 36 mm that can also be worn by women.
The production of another two small series of mechanical watches underlines Lacher's attention to tradition. A limited edition of 200 pieces, Laco 1969, was conscientiously designed in the style of the 1960s; the movements used (Durowe 7423) were actually original movements from 1969. The brand's two classic men's and women's timepieces featuring solid gold cases also have original movements in them, both from the PUW (Pforzheimer Uhren-Rohwerke) productions of 1949 and 1970, and both in limited editions of 25 pieces.
