Jean Marcel Watches

Technology and aesthetics - those are always the concepts that this brand falls back on. The captain of this relatively young Swiss watch brand, Jurgen Kuhn, has a firm grip on the helm, in recent years directing the brand unerringly toward sophisticated design and precise, detailed workmanship. Displaying a good feel for the fundamentals, a balanced range of models that appeals to both the average watch wearer and the mechanical watch enthusiast of discerning taste has come forth.

One factor that has recently proven decisive for this brand is the new popularity of mechanical wristwatches in the United States. Armed with an experienced distributor, Jean Marcel has invested in a multimillion dollar advertising campaign that can be seen all over the world. And the investment has paid off: Not only is this brand available from the same jewelers that sell timepieces made by the industry's most reputable manufactures, the lion's share of the company's export production is now sold in the U.S. The combination of Swiss precision and quality with American marketing know-how at an affordable price has attracted the discriminating eye of consumers stateside. Ranging from chronographs with hand-wound movements and tasteful automatic watches with date hands, power reserve indicators, and subsidiary seconds to automatic chronographs with various additional functions, this collection offers a wide selection of mechanical watches - all at a very reasonable price.

The originally very large collection of about 200 wristwatch models and a fairly large palette of pocket watches has now been tightened up. This has obviously been good for the brand:

The wristwatches' designs have clearly taken shape and allow for the recognition of certain familial ties. Not only is the collection now smaller and finer, Jean Marcel also produces fewer pieces than in recent years contrary to current trends toward expansion. The relationship of mechanical watches to quartz was formerly 70 to 30 percent, and the new balance of 90 to 10 percent makes it doubly clear where the demand lies: Jean Marcel is obviously a producer of high-quality mechanical watches. An added bonus at Jean Marcel is the friendly and efficient service center. While other brands often view "servicing" of watches as yet another profit area, the company's Florida-based branch actually loses money when the in-house watchmaker overhauls timepieces that have been sent in. "Magnum" is a word denoting something extra-large, and doesn't refer only to champagne bottles and handguns. The Magnum Flyback Chronograph is certainly out of the ordinary with its luxurious dimensions, and the technology ticking inside this timepiece is just as rich: The watch is outfitted with a double-digit large date at 12 o'clock and a new arrangement of the totalizers ("Tricompax") in the reconstructed Valjoux chronograph movement.

The Semper models sporting a round case are outfitted with technically demanding complications and have the stuff to push the boundaries of Jean Marcel's collection to the top in the medium term. It's entirely possible that this new orientation "forward and upward" will result in Jean Marcel bringing more elegant watches for "real men" into the marketplace.
