Glycine Watch

Large watches have always been one of the specialties of the Biel-based watch brand Glycine. Founded in the year 1914, the brand at first produced voluminous watches with gold and platinum cases for solvent men. The production of watches containing mechanical watch movements was continued into the 1970s at Glycine, even though the consumer was then almost exclusively demanding quartz watches.

Glycine has always been one of the frontrunners of new trends. For example, in 1938 Glycine was one of the twenty-nine exhibitors at the first Basel fair after the Great Depression and ensuing world economic crisis in the early 1930s. Since then, Glycine hasn't missed a single Basel fair.

After the war, Glycine was one of the first Swiss brands to put its money on the automatic movement. In 1948 the company was already able to show an entire range of automatic In 1952 Glycine introduced the renowned vacuum chronometers that became very famous for their incredible water and shock resistance.

In the year 1996 the company once again took up designing large-formatted watches, something that represented one of the traditional firm's most important production arms in the '50s and '60s. On the American and, especially the Italian markets. Glycine has been strongly represented since the middle of the 1990s with oversized chronographs and sports watches.

The current new model, a detailed replica of the first Glycine automatic model from 1931 represents a flashback to the brand's long-ago beginnings. The special edition, named for founder Eugene Meylan, is naturally outfitted with a contemporary ETA movement, something not so out-of-the-ordinary today. More than 70 years ago, however, an automatic movement was something of a small sensation, and the enthusiastic reception of that era's watch-buying public certainly showed it.
