Gerald Genta Watches

For a number of decades this descendant of Italian ancestors born in Geneva, Gerald Genta, was the designer to set the tone in noble Swiss watchmaking with his creativity. Before he began launching his own brand more than a quarter of a century ago, he worked as a stylist for such famous houses as Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, and Omega, influencing an entire epoch of Swiss watchmaking with his /ignes douces style.

Even if the grandseigneur no longer personally directs the business of his watch brand (after a short intermezzo under the wings of the Singapore Hour Glass company, it has now been incorporated into the expanding Bvlgari group), his successors at the drawing board still feel obligated to express his special feeling for style. Gerald Genta watches today still display the characteristic soft curves, but the playful details have given way to the more modern and striking use of shapes and functional elements.

The retrograde display remains one of the brand's specialties, and a large part of the collection is cultivated on these exclusive dial train modules. Contemporary Retro is the name of a new model from the Arena line "contemporary" and" retro" are in this case not contradictory terms. The simple technical trick of turning the mechanism that controls the jumping hour window display in combination with the retrograde minute hand 90° has a fascinating effect, despite the fact that it has already been presented in several other models. Almost as if it were digital, the arrangement of the hour and minute displays works well almost as if one were reading, as usual from left to right.

In the meanwhile, the company has also issued conventional models with three hands, and some "small complications" are in planning for the near future. The development of these will be shared by Gerald Genta and the individualistic brand Daniel Roth, also belonging to the Bvlgari group. The corporate headquarters in Les Paquis and the production buildings in the Vallee de Joux's Le Sentier are shared by these two as well.

Both of these brands will have no problem existing alongside the Bvlgari brand as each has its own market segment to cover. Bvlgari embodies the modern, sporty style; Daniel Roth stands for more classical watches with complications; and Gerald Genta chiefly represents the avant garde in design and function. Basically, this is how it has always been.
